Muscadines are the "Smarter Grape"

The Muscadine family is commonly referred to as the "smarter grape" because of the extra chromosomes it possesses.  It is believed that this extra set of chromosomes contains the genes that are responsible for giving the Muscadine power packed nutraceutical potential that far outweighs any of its grape cousins and other fruits. 

The additional genes provide ellagic compounds that are virtually non-existent in other grapes.  These compounds allow a variety of processes to take place and creates a thicker skin which protects against UV radiation, insects, fungi, heat, and other disease elements.  While the specific genes have not yet been formally identified in these extra chromosomes, they are credited in science and medical circles for creating the "smarter grape."
