What is a Nutraceutical?

According to the American Association of Pharmaceutical Science, the term 'nutraceutical' was coined from "nutrician" and "pharmaceutical" in 1989 by Stephen DeFelice, MD and is defined as:

a food (or part of a food) that provides medical or health benefits, including the prevention and/or treatment of disease.

Nutraceuticals are considered a dietary supplement under US FDA guidelines and regulations.  However, nutraceuticals differ from dietary supplement in the following:

• Nutraceuticals must not only supplement the diet, but also aid in the prevention and/or treatment of disease and/or disorder
